Not a film for anyone who hasn’t had their first serious crush. So, in other words, this wasn’t a film for me. While it isn’t bad, I just can’t relate to it. However, in about 1-3 years, I might find myself thinking that this completely captures what it’s like to fall for someone the first time. That time is still to come.

The acting is great, which is the good thing I can say about it. I find our female main character Juli Baker very interesting, especially with the observations she makes of her experiences, and I connect with her on that level - but not when she talks about her first love Bryce. Something inside me just yells “GET OVER IT! YOU’RE BORING!” when it comes to their relationship.

Aside from feeling totally disconnected, I was also got bored with the structure of the movie. The scenes repeat to give you both points of view from each of the main characters, and that gets tiring about 1/4 into the movie. This makes Flipped a film that’s also not good for anyone who wants something that’s more, I don’t know, exciting?

Basically, everything that has nothing to do with the main plot is either okay or interesting/good in my eyes. I still just can’t ignore the main plot, though. Unlike a movie like Scott Pilgrim (or maybe even the writer’s own Princess Bride), the main plot doesn’t hold up enough to be something that isn’t entirely about their feelings for each other - no fighting “evil exes”, pretty much. Sub-plots are interesting... but for me they don’t make up for the fact that everything else makes me want to fall asleep. My stepdad enjoyed this more than I did. Definitely an “Ick It.”

Even in the 1960’s in 8th grade middle school, true love can be found and also faltered. FLIPPED is very cute, funny, and filled with 60’s music. It’s more than just a basic love story; it’s the problems two families, a hard relationship between two kids, and the troubles of both Juli Baker (Madeline Carroll) and Bryce Loski (Callan McAuliffe). The movie was enjoyable, fun to watch, and surprisingly not cliché.

FLIPPED portrays Bryce moving into a new neighborhood at 7-years old and meeting another 7-year old girl named Juli who immediately fell in love with him. After several years in that neighborhood, they both begin to reach 8th grade. Bryce at first hated Juli but then he started to like her and then things got crazy. Unfortunately for Bryce, Juli loved Bryce at first but then started to hate him…a problem that also affects Bryce’s dad and Juli’s uncle. These troubles affect both the kids in many ways and also help them learn how to get through struggles. What is cool about Flipped is the movie depicts two different perspectives, Juli’s and Bryce’s. For a romantic comedy, FLIPPED is very good and pleasurable.
