This movie needs a few dashes of Salt. Salt is about a Russian sleeper cell who must take down the country. Salt's biggest issue is that it asks you take quite a few leaps of faith to make up for the holes in the entire story. Other than that, I never felt compelled to root for the main character because all too often I found myself rolling my eyes because it was beyond the limit of believability. Action is the best part which is why it gets the rating that it does. This is a movie that I hope doesn't turn into a franchise. Ages 11+

PARENT: Violence and Secrets
SALT opens with Angelina Jolie getting tortured in her bra and underwear. While that's the most skin the film ever shows, it's certainly just the beginning when it comes to violence. SALT is a spy film and just like when you're watching 007, plenty of people get beaten up, pistol whipped and killed along the way. The film sets up at the beginning that in the world of covert operations, the philosophy of the U.S. government is that it is not worth saving one life at the expense of many other lives and so the high body count can be attributed to national security. The whole experience as experienced through SALT is emotionless and so you, as a parent, should determine if this kind of videogame murder is something you want to present to your kids (it's really the only "offense" other than the repeated use of the word bull@&*!).
Another thought-provoking part of SALT is creative device at the heart of the movie's tagline, "Who is Evelyn Salt?" The film plays with the audience not knowing who is the bad guy, who is the good guy, and who people really are. Given that America has just realized that, in fact, Russian sleeper spies are buried in America's subdivisions that idea of not really knowing your neighbor, teacher, best friend, etc. can be either be useful or frightening to a kid. Is it useful to point out that even though you trust your boy scout leader, don't go on a nature walk alone? Or will that create unnecessary fear or paranoia in your kid? I'm not a child psychologist so I can't tell you that but it is something to think about when determining if you should or shouldn't take your kid to see SALT. If you are going to take them, though, I say only take a kid who is at least 11.
